Georgia Democrats Win the Senate

As of Wednesday, Democrats Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock won the Georgia Senate runoff. The runoff was prompted by the Georgia Senate elections back in November. Since no candidate received at least 50% of the total votes, a run-off election was held.

Ossoff, who defeated Republican David Perdue, is the youngest U.S. senator at the age of 33. Reverend Warnock, after his defeat over Republican Kelly Loeffler, has also made history as the first Black senator from the state of Georgia. The two of them together are the first Democrats to win Senate seats in Georgia since the year 2000.

“Everybody who cast your ballot, everybody who put your faith and confidence in our democracy’s capacity to deliver the representation that we deserve – whether you were for me, or against me – I’ll be for you in the U.S. Senate,” Ossoff said. “I will serve all the people of the state.”

With the U.S. Senate now being evenly divided, Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris will have the power to break ties for the Democrats. This means the Democrats now have the majority and Chuck Schumer will become the new majority leader.
