Marvel Returns with WandaVision

WandaVision kicks off a new era for Marvel shows that follow the characters from the cinematic universe. The last time marvel released any video entertainment was back in 2019 with Spider-Man: Far From Home. Due to the global pandemic, many films were delayed such as Black Widow and The Eternals. Luckily for those who own Disney Plus, most of the shows that were announced already wrapped production their first seasons, which meant that the release dates stayed relatively the same. Only being delayed one month, WandaVision released on the 15th and has already met its fair share of criticism and praise.

The first episode starts off with Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) arriving back home after their wedding day. The show has a black and white color pallet and their home looks older fashioned. This is because the show takes heavy inspiration from the Dick Van Dyke Show that aired back in 1961. Everything from the clothing to the laugh track is used as a call back to this classic television sitcom. The setting has many fans curious since the Marvel Cinematic Universe takes place in current times.

“Episode by episode, week by week, Vision begins to really realize something is not right about this,” Paul Bettany said.  “Something is not right about this town. And then the MCU that we all collide in the most epic of endings.”

This has fans excited to see how this show will evolve and change over time. On the other side, some could care less how it ends up. Despite wanting the show to do well, it feels unnecessary to tell a story about characters that no one has really connected with. There isn’t really anything interesting to grab your attention to the show. Some of that problem partially goes to how Vision had already met his fate in Avengers: Infinity War. Somehow he is still alive within the story despite this taking place after that film. Both a strange plot and the confusing trailer have Marvel fans confused as to what they are supposed to think.

The first two episodes dropped alongside each other, giving fans a little bit of world-building so that they didn’t have to wait another week to get the plot moving. Hopefully, this week’s episode can prove to Marvel fans and critics alike why we should care about Wanda and Vision’s adventures.
