KANSAS CITY, MO — A driver was killed Wednesday evening when a Polaris UTV overturned and landed on top of him after a crash in east Kansas City, according to police. A passenger riding in the vehicle was not hurt and ran to a nearby business to get help.
Kansas City police said officers were called to the 3500 block of Stadium Drive after reports of a fatal crash. Investigators said the UTV had been driven around the outside of a nearby business shortly before the wreck.
Police say UTV backed into wall before flipping
Preliminary findings show the driver and passenger had been in the UTV around 5:20 p.m. Wednesday. Police said the vehicle was moving around the exterior of the business when the driver backed up and struck a short concrete wall.
After the impact, the UTV rolled over. Police said it landed on top of the driver, who died at the scene. Investigators have not said what may have caused the driver to back into the wall or whether speed played any role.
Passenger escapes injury and seeks help at nearby business
The passenger was not injured in the crash, according to Kansas City police. After the rollover, that person went to a nearby business to alert others and seek assistance.
Police did not release any details about the passenger beyond confirming that the person survived without injury. No information was provided about whether anyone at the business immediately called 911 or whether emergency crews arrived soon after the passenger reported the wreck.
Victim’s name and age have not been released
Police have not yet identified the man who died, and they have not released his age. That means investigators are still working with limited public information as the case remains open.
Kansas City police also have not said whether the victim and passenger were employees of the business near Stadium Drive or were there for another reason. The department has not described the relationship between the two people or explained why they were driving around the property.
