HARVEY, IL — A 6-month-old boy from Chicago died Sunday evening after a rollover crash on Interstate 57 in the south suburbs, Illinois State Police said. Seven other people who were riding in the vehicle were taken to hospitals with injuries.
The crash happened near 147th Street in Harvey around 5:45 p.m. when a northbound vehicle flipped, state police said. The infant was identified as Dakari Lomax of Englewood and was pronounced dead at Ingalls Memorial Hospital, according to state police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Illinois State Police say no other vehicles were involved in the wreck
State police said the crash involved only one vehicle. They did not say what caused the rollover, and no additional details about how the vehicle lost control were released.
The lack of a stated cause leaves open questions about what happened in the moments before the vehicle overturned. At this point, authorities have confirmed the time, location and number of people hurt, but not the sequence that led to the crash.
The infant was taken to Ingalls Memorial Hospital and later pronounced dead
Dakari Lomax was identified by the Cook County medical examiner’s office and Illinois State Police. Officials said the child died after being transported to Ingalls Memorial Hospital following the crash.
The medical examiner’s office and state police have not released further information about the child’s injuries. The remaining occupants were also taken to hospitals, but authorities have not provided their ages, conditions or whether they were all inside the same car at the time of the rollover.
Northbound I-57 lanes and the 147th Street ramp stayed closed for hours
The crash forced the closure of northbound lanes on I-57 and the 147th Street entrance ramp. Those closures remained in place until about 10:45 p.m. Sunday, several hours after the wreck.
That stretch of interstate is a major route through the south suburbs, and the shutdown would have affected evening traffic in Harvey and nearby communities. Illinois State Police did not announce any long-term roadway impact after the lanes reopened.

The rollover happened on a corridor that carries heavy suburban traffic through Cook County, where Interstate 57 connects several south suburban communities.
