COLORADO SPRINGS, CO — The motorcyclist killed in a late-August crash on South Union Boulevard has been identified as 48-year-old Clinton Eaton, the Colorado Springs Police Department said. He died after a single-motorcycle wreck near East Fountain Boulevard on the city’s south side.
Police said the crash happened Saturday, Aug. 29, at about 5:15 p.m. Officers and medical personnel responded to the 800 block of South Union Boulevard and found that a motorcycle had gone off the road. The rider was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say the motorcycle missed a curve and left South Union Boulevard
CSPD said its preliminary investigation indicates Eaton was riding south on South Union Boulevard when he failed to negotiate a curve. That caused the motorcycle to leave the roadway. Police have not said whether any other vehicles were involved, and they described the crash as a single-vehicle incident.
The area is near East Fountain Boulevard, a busy part of the city where traffic can move quickly through turns and intersections. Investigators have not released additional details about speed, weather, road conditions or whether impairment was a factor. The case remains open.
Coroner later confirmed the rider's identity
The El Paso County Coroner’s Office identified the rider as Eaton on Wednesday, Sept. 2. That identification came several days after the crash, following the initial response by police and medical personnel at the scene.
Public identification is a key step in fatal crash investigations, allowing officials to notify family and move forward with any follow-up review. In this case, no additional personal details about Eaton were released by police or the coroner’s office beyond his age and name.
Crash adds to Colorado Springs' rising traffic death count in 2026
CSPD said the death is the 41st traffic fatality in Colorado Springs so far in 2026. At the same point last year, the city had recorded 38 traffic deaths, putting this year’s tally three higher than the same date in 2025.
Police did not say whether the city’s overall increase is tied to a specific roadway, traffic pattern or type of crash. Still, the fatality count shows the toll of road deaths remains significant in Colorado Springs as the year continues.
South Union Boulevard crash remains under active investigation
Colorado Springs police said the investigation is active and open. That means detectives or traffic investigators may still be reviewing physical evidence, scene information and any witness accounts to determine exactly what happened before the motorcycle went off the roadway.
CSPD is asking anyone with information about the crash to call police at (719) 444-7000. Officials have not announced whether they expect to release any additional findings, but the case is still being examined.
