Winners and Nominees of the 2022 Emmy Awards

The year prior, the Emmys was held indoors in 2020 after a few years of COVID. This year was the first year the Emmys was hosted indoors since COVID, with “Saturday Night Live” star Kenan Thompson hosting the Emmys. There’s a long list of presenters, such as Lizzo, Kelly Clarkson, RuPaul Charles, Selena Gomez, and more. This year the Emmys was also hosted on NBC, and was around 3 hours.

Drama:

Succession won best drama series over other nominees, such as,  Squid Game, Euphoria, Strangers Things, Ozark, Severance, Better Call Saul, and Yellowjackets. The show Succession centers around the owners of “Waystar RoyCo”, involved in global media entertainment, called the Roy family, attempting to take power over the company along with the well being over their family. The show focuses on abuse, trauma, and the idea of looking into comfort in our families. 

With Succession winning best drama series, The Lead Actress in a Drama Series award was awarded to Zendaya, showing in Euphoria. Lee Jung-jae, starring in the popular show squid game, won Lead Actor in a Drama series as well. Julia Garner won Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role in “Ozark”, along with Matthew Macfadyen with his win as Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his role in “Succession”. 

 

“Euphoria is a really funny show, I love the anticipation for it,” Junior, Paul Hernandez said, “I used to try Euphoria looks when I was in eighth grade”.

 

  

Comedy:

“Ted Lasso” won the best comedy series prize, running up with Hacks, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Barry, and more. “This show is about good and evil, and this show is about the truth of life. The show is about all that stuff, but mostly about our response to those things, and your response to our show is overwhelming …We’ll see you for season three” Ted lasso said in response to his reward. 

Along with his win for his comedy show, Ted also took back the best lead actor and best supporting actor award. Jean smart, who starred in “Hacks” a runner up for best comedy series prize, ended up winning Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. Sheryl Lee Ralph, starring in “Abbott Elementary”, brought home the Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series Award.

 

“Ted Lasso is an amazing and stand up guy,” Senior Austin Huges said. “I really enjoy his sense of humor”.

 

Variety Sketch Series:

Saturday Night Live” streamed on NBC, won the award for best Variety Sketch Series. Saturday Night Live is widely popular and has won many awards in the past, including actors in the show such as “Bonnen Yang” and has also won many awards for their writing and directing throughout the past seasons.

 

Competition program: 

“Watch Out for the Big Grrrls”, a show where a group of plus size women compete as backup dancers for Lizzo, won the Competition Program at the Emmys running up with “Nailed it!”, “RuPauls Drag Race ”, ‘’The Voice”, and more. This show gave Amazon its only win this year at the Emmys ,however they’ve won awards in the past. Lizzos show also beat “RuPauls Drag Race ” which had continuously won the reality category four times.             

 

 “I’ve always really liked Lizzo and thought she was really cool,” Sophomore Isabella Cruz said. “Her dancers are really impressive”.
